The paradoxical discourse of normalising otherness

Abstract

The text is an editorial to a specia issue, dedicated to the problem of otherness or difference in the context of Czech school. The issue was created as a reaction on the escalated debate about inclusion that (according to its opponents) will lead to deterioration of the school as "the other" children will be included in the mainstream school.

The text tries to reflect why of all possible kinds of otherness or difference on which the modern idea of individuality is based the debate (discourse) selects only the pathological or negative elements. In the context of this analysis, the text then presents and reflects contributions of respective authors included in the special issue.
