Abstract
The correspondence of Karel Havlíček will actually be published in a representative, critically verified reader's edition - or, in other words, in a "popular science" edition designed to have six volumes, the first of which has been published and the second of which is to come out at the end of 2018. The edition follows up on the recent edition of Božena Němcová's letters in many ways.
It is supplemented by a number of introductory studies, extensive explanation notes, and other background materials. The correspondence consists of over 1200 letters, over 300 of them written in German.
These can be divided up into several distinct groups - Havlíček's letters to his parents from his studies, which form the main part of the first volume, letters to Havlíček from Vilém Gabler, official correspondence with authorities etc. This article presents how the editor deals with the original German text of the letters and what detailed questions are relevant for an appropriate communication of the letters to the reader.
The German letters are issued in a new Czech translation, with the original wording available in the editorial commentary and also in an electronic corpus.
