Translation of German letters by V. Gabler to K. Havlíček

Abstract

This article deals with the translation of German letters from Karel Havlíček's correspondence into Czech: to Havlíček's letters to parents and especially the letters by Vilém Gabler. It justifies the choice of individual translation solutions with regard to the position of the German letters in the Havlíček's correspondence and the state of the 19th century Czech language, represented mainly by the corpus of the correspondence.

It attempts to indicate how difficult it is to reproduce the relations between the subject of the writer and the addressee of the letter in the translation. These relations are not only reflected but also construed in the text of the letter.
