It is generally accepted that history is important for understanding patterns in plant community structure and diversity. However, "history" comprises anything from the evolutionary history of plants over millions of years to land-use change over years or decades.

The same ambiguity applies to the usage of "long term", which is frequently found in articles published in Journal of Vegetation Science (JVS): more than 10% of titles or abstracts and almost 30% of full texts.
