Plants causing poisoning

Publication |
2018

Abstract

The book provides comprehensive information on poisonous and potentially poisonous plants of Central European flora, their identification, content substances responsible for toxicity, signs of poisoning and the possibilities of helping the affected person. Plant poisoning is a small but stable proportion of the total number of intoxications requiring hospitalization.

Several concrete examples illustrate the introductory chapters that explain the reasons for the toxicity of some plants, how to determine the cause of poisoning, and the general principle of therapy. In the next part of the book, almost 300 species of plants are shown and color photographs show that they can undermine human health under certain conditions.

These are the original Central European species or plants that have been long-lived, but also species introduced recently or imported as decorative plants into interiors. The publication is intended for the broad medical community, primarily general practitioners and pharmacists, but also to teachers or parents.

They can all help identify a poisonous plant, give first aid to the patient, and pass the plant information to a healthcare professional. Students of medicine, pharmacy, biology, botany, agriculture and forestry will offer this book a new look at their field.
