Abstract
The chapter discusses the relationship between public universities and other scientific and research-oriented and the public. The chapter focuses on a topic of responsibility of academic institutions towards the public with a special attention to educational (in a wider sense of term) role of academic institutions.
The text mentions some decisive moments and ideas from the era of emerge and development of modern universities or chosen problems of academic institutions connected with current educational policy (especially in the field of European educational policy. Attention is also paid to a relationship of academic institution, public space and civil society.
