'They are skilful but I despise them': Competence and Warmth in Relation to Emotional Responses in Selected Professional Categories

Abstract

Stereotype Content Model and Complementary Stereotype are the most cited social-psychological theories in the field of stereotypes. In a presented article these theories were applied to 12 occupational categories with different prestige, educational requirements and nature of working activities.

All occupational categories were evaluated on dimension of competency which was divided into subdimension of intelligence and subdimension of dexterity and on dimension of warmth. Next was studied which emotions are associated with individual occupational categories - envy, admiration, pity and disgust.

Quantitative analysis was completed with qualitative analysis of spontaneously generated attributes of each occupational category. The sample consisted of 269 respondents.

Results showed that division of competency into intelligence and dexterity is effective because competency is too global for occupational categories. Some categories confirmed complementary stereotypes - there was a tendency to balance low evaluated dimension with high evaluated other dimension.

Also, it was proved that associated emotions are closely linked to evaluated dimensions.
