Notes on Chronic Eustachian Tube Dysfunction

Publication |
2018

Abstract

A properly functioning Eustachian tube (ET) is essential for the proper functioning of the middle ear. Therefore, the issue of ET dysfunction is being given ever more attention.

Basic ET features include ventilation, drainage and protection of the middle ear. In the case of a failure of these functions, we talk about ET dysfunction.

ET dysfunction can be further divided into acute and chronic (duration longer than 3 months). Depending on the cause, the dysfunction can be divided into ET obstruction and patulous tube, where ET obstruction is significantly more frequent.

The authors give an overview of the more detailed division of ET dysfunctions and diagnostic options, including the latest methods. The advantages and disadvantages of individual examinations are highlighted.
