Abstract
An analysis of the bibliographic corpus of French written beletry, published between 1989 and 2013. The analysis confirms several known facts and some interesting unforeseen details.
It attempts to answer questions such as: How do we know French literature? What do we value about French literature? Do we have the opportunity to read all the important works of French authors? It appears that Czech readers mainly seek out adventure stories, whether these appear in novels from the 19th century or current works. Literature with commercial potential leads the charts - but how do the publishers gauge which books will sell? It seems that betting on bestsellers in France is not enough.
Generally, publishing works based on historical events, social novels, detective stories or science fiction pays off. Even erotic novels from authors such as Apollinaire, Musset or Simenon and for those of more ponderous nature The Little Prince.
Nevertheless, the absolute Czech "French number one" is Jules Verne.
