Abstract

The work focuses on research and comparison of the basic frames reconstructed by American Democratic and Repunlican leaders during 2012 presidential campaign. It seems critically important to trace the interconnection between language and mental structures in modern American political discourse.

The analysis of the corpus of monological and dialogical speeches by B. Obama and M.

Romney using the cognitive theory of metaphor helps find out basic concepts of American nation to which the main modern politicians appeal. For instance, the reasearch proves the idea of G. Lakoff (2004) that the Republican model STATE IS A STRICT FATHER should be opposed by the Democratic model STATE IS A NURTURANT PARENT: the latter one proved to be fully realized in the Obama rhetoric.
