Abstrakt
A very unique monument is displayed in the Rijksmuseum van Oudheden in Leiden. This piece, the sarcophagus of Simpelveld, bears a remarkable relief decoration on the inside.
The presented poster deals with this funerary monument as it is the evidence for the aspects of life and identity of the deceased lady. The adaptation of new tendencies or the preservation of own identity is deduced based on the analysis of the discovered grave goods and the sculptured relief.
This paper examines the peculiarities of this funerary monument, which is the decoration placed on its inside walls or the fact that there was a cremation buried in the sarcophagus. These might be the imprints of the identity of the deceased or her family derived from their cultural background, as it is a common phenomenon to reflect wealth, social status or ethnicity on funerary monuments among the population of the Roman Empire.
