Cursive writing a manuscript writing in Czech schools - how looks the handwriting of contemporary pupils?

Abstract

The paper described the phases of the handwriting skills from 1st to 5th class. We described the procedure of dynamic handwriting acquisition concerning two different alphabetic scripts - traditional cursive writing and alternative manuscript Comenia Script.

Our research sample included two groups. The first group comprises writers who employ cursive writing, the second group considered the Comenia Script writers.

The study was designed as a cross-sectional research. The level of pupils' handwriting was tested at the beginning and at the end of the school year 2015/2016.

We used quantitative and qualitative methodology approach for data processing. Three main factors were applied in the statistical evaluation: age, gender and style of penmanship.

The results indicated that the style of penmanship reveals different development phases of handwriting skills. The Comenia Scripts writers demonstrate better writtings skills.

Regarding the gender differences the results reveal that girls have better writing skills from 1st to 5th class.
