Publication

Abstract

Department of South Slavic and Balkan Studies at the Faculty of Arts of Charles University in Prague and Slovanská knihovna - Národní knihovna ( Slavic library - National Library) organised an international scientific symposium to celebrate a hundred years from Cankar's death, entitled From Ljubljana to Vienna to Prague. Ivan Cankar and his Slavic contemporaries, which took place on November 22nd and 23rd, 2018 in Zasedacím sálu Národní knihovny ČR.

There were 20 scientists - participants from Czech, Slovenian and Austrian universities. Ivan Cankar lived in Vienna for years, and he was also associated with Prague, since the first translations of his work were published in the Czech Republic.

Already during his lifetime, critical studies were made in the Czech Republic and his plays were staged in theatres. Satire Za narodov blagor was staged in Prague in 1905 even before the first Slovene performance.

The symposium relates to past Slovene symposia on Prague university grounds (in 2008 Symposium on Zofka Kveder, in 2010 symposium In the eyes of the second - on Slovenian-Czech contacts, 2014 Symposium of 100 Years of Slovenian Studies at Charles University in Prague).
