Selected aspects of technical vocabulary learning in medical German

Publication at First Faculty of Medicine |
2018

Abstract

The paper deals with the acquisition of technical vocabulary in medical German. Medical German has been taught at the 1st Faculty of Medicine of Charles University as one of three contemporary foreign languages.

The courses run for 2 semesters and are on CEFR level B2+. Each technical / vocational language has its own issues, difficulties or challenges that have to be overcome during the learning process by non-native speakers and language users.

There are two crucial linguistic features to be identified and implied in German medical language, namely horizontal and vertical layering and synonymy. This places high demands on the vocabulary acquisition and use.
