Abstract

The chapter examines the rate of vowel-related glottalization in Moravia and Silesia. According to the traditional conception, glottalization is less extended in Moravia and Silesia compared to Bohemia.

Dialectological handbooks give the information about glottalization usually only indirectly, by means of voicing assimilation. Works focused on the given Moravian or Silesian dialect confirm almost automatic usage of glottalization after a pause.

With a few exceptions it prevails over the realization without glottalization in non-pause positions, both in combination vowel + vowel and consonant + vowel. The experiment based on read and semispontaneous speech of university students in a formal communicative situation shows the predominant usage of glottalization in all positions and combinations except the position in the middle of a word after a prefix.
