The radio said... or the mutual alignment of location and actor in a bilingual treebank

Abstract

In the paper we address one type of structural difference between Czech and English parallel sentences in a bilingual PCEDT treebank, the mutual mapping of actors and locations. Within the analysis of treebank examples, we show the effect of language-specific syntactic and semantic preferences of individual words in the positions of the subject and predicate on the differences in valency structure, as well as the effect of diathesis and the principal of agent demoting.
