Abstract

The paper presents results of a research study that aims at investigating the preferences of students of Czech as a foreign language regarding Czech cultural facts (reálie). The research is based on the dichotomy of vysoké/nízké reálie, previously described in Romaševská - Lah (2017), and tests the hypothesis that foreign students of the Czech language generally prefer nízké reálie.

The analysis was carried out on empirical data elicited using an electronic questionnaire containing twenty four questions, i.e. pairs of choices. One half of the total number of questions addressed the subjects' preferences for vysoké/nízké reálie, while the other half targeted their preferences with respect to the control variable, staré/nové reálie.

The data was analyzed using quantitative research methods and appropriate statistical tests. The results have shown that students of Czech as a foreign language prefer vysoké reálie, indicating that the initial hypothesis, based on the theoretical discussion in Romaševská - Lah (2017), needs to be rejected.
