Hard dental tissue injuries

Abstract

Injuries to hard dental tissues represent a serious problem in dentistry. The current classification is based on a system adopted by the World Health Organization (WHO).

The WHO system was modified slightly by Andreasen and Andreasen (World Health Organization, 1994). According to the WHO classification, hard dental tissue injuries are divided into crown fractures (infractions, enamel fractures, uncomplicated fractures, complicated fractures), root fractures and crown-root fractures (F.M.

Andreasen & J.O. Andreasen, 2007; Glendor et al., 2007).

The purpose of the dental injury classification is to provide a description of specific conditions, thus allowing specialists to recognize and treat them using recommended therapeutic methods. It also allows for data collection to monitor many aspects of dental traumatology (Glendor et al., 2007).
