Abstract

Anaesthesiology and intensive medicine are multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary specialties - globally unified in the developed world with their progressive knowledge, experience and skills of vital importance. Recent profile of their patients is changing, increasing in both limits of human age.

Development in anaesthesia is reflecting surgical and complex perioperative challenges and delayed neurophysiogical sequelae. Intensive medicine is expanding her interest from the rescue frame to longterm results of sustainable quality of individual life.

New indications and procedures are emerging, followed by ethical and medicolegal controversies to be solved: home intensive medicine, precision of prognostic evaluation and rational decision making considering sophisticated support of vital functions.
