Accuracy and speed in numerosity as key indicators of difficulties in the development of arithmetic skills of young school-age children

Abstract

The contribution is focused on the current status of knowledge about disorders of mathematical skills and introduces the findings of the study titled "Accuracy and speed in numerosity at individuals with dyscalculia." The main goal is to describe possible causes of these difficulties. The research compared the performances of individuals with dyscalculia and control participants on a range of number and numerosity processing tasks.

We concluded that dyscalculia is related to specific disabilities in basic numerical and numerosity processing, but especially in the processing of symbols (numbers) indicating the numerosity. That affects the ability to acquire simple counting and arithmetical skills.

The contribution further describes other possible ways in which research in the field of mathematical abilities can occur.
