Abstract

The concept of a cultivated speech involves, in addition to formulation accuracy, also the ability to use expression means from different style varieties diversely and purposely in congruence with the communicative situation. One of the key varieties is the standard shape of language, intended primarily for public communication.

Contemporary experience with the public media materials shows, however, that the readiness and ability to use the standard Czech in spoken language gradually decreases, with negative impact on the language culture situation in general. Some speakers, especially among the younger generation, master the mother language in space of their individual usage only, preferring this usage in all communicative situations.

The article discusses some sources and consequences of this state and emphasizes the relevance of school education in the effort to develop the active speech skills of the young in their mother tongue.
