The chapter introduces the formal expression of the effect of a temporal mortality increase to the overall mortality measure. In particular, in the text, the effect of the World War II (i.e. temporary mortality increase) for the overal cohort life expectancy at birth is studied.

Using the derived formal expression based on the biometric functions it was shown, that the overall decrease of the life expectancy at birth of the cohort is rather marginal, when the cohort was affected by the short-term mortality increase corresponding to the estimated war effect.
