Effect of short-term fasting on bone metabolism in intact rats-males

Abstract

We monitored the effect of 24-hour starvation on bone metabolism in intact rats of male Wistar strains. A significant loss of body weight and adipose tissue was found in the starving group compared to ST1-S rats.

The bone thickness and force required to break the torsion of the right tibia was lower for ST1-H compared to ST1-S. Differences in the concentration of bone homogenate markers between groups were not found.

We believe that rats feeding through standard laboratory diet have ensured the formation of an adequate amount of fatty tissue that is metabolized during fasting. The loss of adipose tissue helps save muscle and bone tissue.
