The "Kunstkammer" of Ferdinand I

Publication at Faculty of Arts |
2018

Abstract

The author is devoted to the previously neglected theme - the Kunstkammer of Emperor Ferdinand I (1503-1564). Its existence is evidenced by references to written sources and, above all, to the surviving works of art and curiosities that the Emperor has gathered.

Although these collections became the basis for building the Kunstkammer Maximilián II, Archduke Ferdinand II of Tyrol and later also Emperor Rudolf II, we know almost nothing about their structure and unknown place today. The author tries to answer primarily whether the Kunstkammer of Emperor Ferdinand I was part of Vienna's Hofburg.
