Abstract
The chapter deals with the development of the powers in Western and Southern Europe in the late Middle Ages and at the beginning of the Renaissance. The impacts of Ottoman expansion on the fate of Eastern Europe are also remembered.
The chapter tries to bring to light important historical events and leading figures of that time and to point out new ideas that have paved the way for the birth of modern European society.
