The overclaiming technique and its application in various fields of research in self-assessment of knowledge and skills: the results of a pilot study

Publication

Abstract

This article presents the overclaiming technique (OCT) and shows up to date results of the application of this method in a pilot study realized by the authors in the Czech Republic. The OCT as a procedure for measuring the respondents'accuracy works with a list of terms which is presented to the respondents for assessment.

However, a minor part of the list consists of non-existing words. Their task is to express the certainty of being familiar with these terms.

Two parameters are needed for the data evaluation - IA (the accuracy index - the ability to distinguish between the existing and non-existing words) and IE (the exaggeration inde - the overall tendency to express "yes"). The IA data and the IE data show significant association with a number of factors.

As far as the ICT knowledge is concerned, the ICT students show higher values of the IA and the IE than the non-ICT students. At the same time, there is a positive correlation in ICT between the IA and the maths grades.
