When Lady Ochikubo Crossed the Wall

Abstract

This article deal with two aspects of the one of the oldest works of Japanese fiction, Ochikubo monogatari, from the end of the 10th century. It dispalys how its author crossed the limits of a genre called mamako monogatari, and how the main character, lady Ochikubo, drives the plot contary to the popular believe that its role is only secondary.
