Abstract

Parenteral hydration or parenteral nutrition are a part of intestinal failure treatment. Parenteral nutrition is appli-cation of nutrients - carbohydrates, proteins, fat emulsi-ons, minerals and vitamins - into the blood stream.

It is indicated when the gastrointestinal tract cannot be used to process nutrients and energy. If parenteral nutrition is required in the long term, then we commence with paren-teral nutrition at home, after educating the patient and his or her family.

Complex care for patients in this regimen is provided by a specialised nutrition centre, which is staffed notjustby doctors, but also specialised nurses, pharmacists and nutritionists. To avoid complications, cooperation and education of agencies providing home care is necessary.

Patients in the home parenteral nutrition programme are also in the care of other specialists and general practitioners, who are the main audience for the following article about the indications, application and problem-solving for home parenteral nutrition.
