Malnutrition and nutritional deficits in hospitalised patients with idiopathic bowel diseases occur in up to 75 - 80 % cases. Not just doctors and nutritionists, but the patients themselves deal with dietary measures for IBD.
Dietary recommendations vary depending on the activity of the disease. In case of relapses, low residue diet is indicated, while during remissions, standard diet with higher amounts of soluble dietary fibre is indica-ted.
Patients often persist with low residue diet even while in remission, as a result of erroneous decisions of their doctors. Nutritional therapy is an important aspect of IBD treatment, it involves both enteral and parenteral nutrition.
