Newborn hyperbilirubinemia in the general practitioner's office for children and adolescents

Abstract

Hyperbilirubinemia of newborns is a common issue in neonatal wards. In part of the newborn, a new or recurrent increase in serum bilirubin and a severe yellowish skin tone and a sclera resulting from the accumulation of bilirubin may occur after discharge into home care.

Although hyperbilirubinaemia of newborns involves a number of clinical units, a GP for children and adolescents most frequently encounters transient non-conjugated hyperbilirubinemia. To determine the correct diagnosis, it is necessary to know the differential diagnosis of hyperbilirubinemia and to perform proper monitoring of the iterar dynamics.
