Nicknames in groups of children

Publication at Faculty of Education |
2018

Abstract

This monograph deals with child and youth nicknames in small social groups, especially in school and scout communities. Extensive language material (2493 nicknames) that we have acquired has been analysed on different levels.

We primarily deal with the detailed classification of nicknames on the basis of the linguistic motivation for their creation, based on the author's own proposal for a new sorting of nicknames.. In a separate chapter we deal with the language traits and the variability of nicknames when used in communication.

We pay attention to the mutual concord and differences between scout and school nicknames in terms of their form, language motivation for their origin and use in communication. Part of our work is an extensive dictionary that documents the diversity of nicknames used in communication by pupils of the older school age at the turn of the 20th and 21st centuries.
