BACKGROUND: The purpose of the paper was to identify the impact of socio-economic conditions on the number of deaths caused by alcohol in Slovakia. METHODS: We used the dataset of all the deaths in the Slovak Republic from 2001 to 2015 and data about selected socio-economic indicators in Slovak regions.
We calculated the potential gain in life expectancy and subsequently estimated a linear panel model. The analysis was performed in the R Software environment.
RESULTS: The analysis showed that alcohol-related behavioural disorders affect men more than women. The rising trend for both sexes is significant.
There are also marked regional differences among Slovak regions, to the detriment of structurally affected regions. On the basis of the estimated model, only the average nominal monthly wage has a statistically significant impact on the potential gain in life expectancy in cases of alcohol behavioural disorders.
CONCLUSIONS: The results confirm the importance of the social and economic determinants of health and the importance of the study from the regional perspective.
