Abstract
Formerly industrial harbour area adjoining the city centre of Bremen in Germany has experienced a transformation of land use in recent years. This paper brings a comparative study of two different parts of Bremen with the aim to track their past and current development encouraged mostly by market forces.
Both localities show the effort to preserve at least some elements of their abundant history in appropriate coexistence with newly emerging residential or commercial projects.
