The first part of this series on the history of biological sciences over the last 100 years presents the substantial changes for biolo-gical sciences particularly in the form of the expansion of the higher education and in-stitutional base, the emergence of new re-search centres and journals and the bolste-ring of ties between scientific research and the development of technology following the establishment of the Czechoslovak Re-public. It also follows the changes brought about by the Nazi occupation, the Second World War and the subsequent dismantling of the German scientific establishment.
