Quintus Septimius Florens Tertullianus and the Issue of Religious Conversion

Publication at Protestant Theological Faculty |

Abstract

The main theme of this paper is Tertullian's journey from paganism to orthodox Christianity, from there to Montanism, and then further to his own sect of "Tertullianists". Traces of this journey can be followed in Tertullian's extensive works, for example in the development of his views on second marriages or a martyr's death.

Tertullian constructs his Christian reflections in harmony with his knowledge of the secular world and the value system of the culture of Antiquity. He brings the classi cal legacy to the Christian church and thus attempts to resolve the contradiction between Athens and Jerusalem, between the Academy and the Church.
