Royal and Imperial Charters and the Acquisition of Bohemian Lordship (Herrenstand) in the Period before the Battle of White Mountain

Publication at Faculty of Law |

Abstract

The study deals with the question of the lower nobility finding their way into the Lordship in Bohemia and Moravia in the wider context of the estate social mobility in the 16th and early 17th century. The legal standards adopted in the late 15th century clearly estabilished that being admitted into the "Herrenstand" is tied both to the consent of the ruler and of the "Herrenstand" itself.

In this study emphasis is put mainly on the role of the ruler in this process, which was expressed by the issue of royal charters elevating among the "Herrenstand".
