Abstract
Registry of voluntary bone marrow donors enables and ensures the search for a suitable HLA compatible donor for patients with haematological and non-haematological malignancies, congenital malformations of hematopoiesis, immunity or metabolism, for which no suitable bone marrow donor or hematopoietic stem cells have been found. Often, allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation is the only curative treatment for these patients.
The work was based on the hypothesis that blood plasma donors are well placed to enter the registry of voluntary bone marrow donors. Methods: A quantitative research was conducted through an anonymous, non-standardized questionnaire.
The target group was blood plasma donors aged 18 - 35 years. Aim of the study: The main aim was to find out the interest of blood plasma donors in entering the bone marrow donor registry.
Results: The research clearly shows that more than half of the respondents expressed interest in entering the bone marrow donor registry and the vast majority would use their blood plasma donor center to enter the registry. Conclusion: Blood plasma donors are a very suitable target group for potential entry into bone marrow donor registers.
Benefit: Creating an information leaflet for blood plasma donors to raise awareness of the existence of registers through plasmapheretic centers has been extended by more than 1,000 new potential donors to the Bone Marrow Donor Registry.
