Cognitive and communicative principles as a ground for teaching Czech

Publication at Faculty of Education |
2019

Abstract

The paper presents cognitive and communicative approaches as the response to the problems that teaching Czech in our school has been facing for a long time. Although modern Czech language didactics has emphasised communicative aims since the 80s, traditional normative-grammatical approach still prevails in teaching Czech at primary and secondary schools.

This approach, however, has failed to prove itself successful, mainly as far as developing pupils' communicative skills, meeting their communication needs and awareness of contemporary social and cultural reality is concerned. The paper offers certain solutions including an example of a teaching strategy for selected subject matter.
