New consensus statement regarding the treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus was presented at the EASD (European Association for the Study of Diabetes) Annual Meeting in 2018.1 At the same time, this statement - the second of its type, beside updates of the first - was published in a journal.2 It deserves to be viewed as an interesting document, attracting much attention. However, it should not be "copied" in our conditions where more than half of diabetics are treated by specialists; it should rather inspire novel thoughts about where our diabetology is heading and about the future possibilities in the therapy of this severe illness.
