Abstract

This entry explores media literacy and media education in the Czech environment from historical and current perspectives. Although there is a historical record of media literacy and debates dating back to the 17th century, media (literacy) education as a cross-curricular subject found its place in public elementary and general secondary education only in 2007.

Formal media education in the Czech Republic is developed mainly under a critical and protectionist framework. It neglects its historical foundation and at the same time struggles to reflect the later developments in digital and social media and the associated increase of user-generated content.

There is an increasing body of research exploring these issues, yet not much of it is applied.
