The therapeutic use of the fly larvae of Lucilia sericata to treat diabetic chronic necrotic wounds, dates back to the beginnings of civilisation, and now experiences a renaissance. The practice of larval therapy is increasing around the world because of its simplicity, efficacy and safety.
Clinical indications for larval treatment are, in particular, severe necrotic wounds infected with multidrug-resistant bacteria accompanied by the presence of significant co-morbidities precluding radical surgical intervention. According to available results, this therapy improves the prognosis and shortens the treatment period of chronic diabetic wounds.
