Working context of teaching assistant profession

Abstract

The chapter deals with the organizational aspects of the teaching assistant profession. Methodical leadership of teaching assistants is presented as essential; this leadership should be in practice provided primarily by teachers, but also by more experienced teaching assistants.

An important role is played by the staff of intenral or external school counseling centers. The quality of the assistants' work is also influenced by the material and technical equipment of the schools.

The main problems in organizing the activities of teaching assistants are based on: (i) their performance of work beyond working hours, (ii) insufficient time for indirect teaching activities, and (iii) low salaries in the profession.
