Suicide occurs globally across individual cultures, regions, and life cycles. There is also a prison population among the groups that show increased suicide rates.
This paper provides an overview of relevant literature in the field of epidemiology of suicide at global and local levels, and refers specifically to the prison population. Also described are effective approaches to the prevention of suicide at the general, selective, and indicated levels, and the possibilities of preventing to suicidal behaviour in the corrective institution environment.
Specifically, the situation in the Czech Republic is discussed, where a systematic approach to the prevention of suicide has been missing for a long time, to which the current WHO project, the Ministry of Health of the Czech Republic and NIMH responds.
