Symbiotic stars belong to an interesting class of interacting binaries. Thanks to their properties, they can serve as unique astrophysical laboratories in studying of accretion processes, winds or jets.

Since the beginning of this century, with the onset of the systematic surveys, dozens of symbiotics have been discovered not only in the Milky Way but also in several other neighbouring galaxies. In the recent version of our New Online Database of Symbiotic Variables, there are 71 confirmed and 88 more or less promising candidates for extragalactic symbiotic stars.

Many of these systems are still relatively unexplored. In the present work, we focus on the parameters and behaviour of these objects, especially on those in the Magellanic Clouds.

We emphasize the unusual characteristics observed in some systems of this symbiotic population.
