Review of the book of sociologist Karel Černý focusing on the process of "modernization" of the Middle East. Review critically traces central thesis of the book about the "uneven modernization".

Author points out to its embrace of the problematic conception of social change, incoherence amongst the concepts of uneven modernization and multiple modernities and interpretation of Middle Eastern modernization as an analogy to modernization of Europe.
