The city of Naples and its inhabitants have been dealing with bilingual situation for centuries. The Neapolitan language differs a lot from the so-called "standard Italian" and it is impenetrable for the majority of the Italians up to the present day.
Despite the fact that it is very often seen as a marginal "dialect", Neapolitan theatre is known all around the globe. How come does the world know about these pieces of work, which we would have probably believed to stay within the Italian borders? Eduardo de Filippo did not let the Neapolitan theatre close upon itself.
He was undoubtedly one of the most influential intermediaries of the Neapolitan culture in general and spread the Neapolitan realia via his suggestive plays. This contribution will focus on the means by which Eduardo brought closer both Neapolitan language and Neapolitan culture to the Italians and subsequently to the world.
