This paper deals with a literary variant of Eastern Turkī from the 15th and 16th centuries, generally referred to as Chaghatay. The poetic compositions of Bābur, Bayram Khān, Ḥusaynī and Navā'ī are taken as material for lexicological analysis.

Following the introduction, I focus on peculiar phonetic features of Classical Turkī, including vocalic harmony, as well as word formation and lexical etymology. The Classical Turkī differs from Chagatay of the earlier period in showing a preponderance of Persian and Perso-Arabic borrowings.
