The use of photogrammetric documentation at the Czech-Uzbek archaeological mission in Uzbekistan - seasons 2017 and 2018

The Czech-Uzbek archaeological expedition led by members of the Institute for Classical Archaeology, Charles University in Prague, for many years conducts research in the south of Uzbekistan, in the Sherobod district. Currently is working on several projects, among them is the documentation and excavation of archaeological sites and objects that vary from chronological point of view (Bronze Age, Iron Age, Hellenism - Graeco-Bactrian Period) and typological point of view (long-term settlement with walls, short-term period, kurgans - stone mounds, rock art).

One of the documentation methods is close-range photogrammetry, applied mostly through the excavation process and occasionally in documentation of single objects and finds. The field survey consists of the acquisition of the images with DSLR cameras and measuring the points with geodetic total station.

Rendering of the images is made in Agisoft Photoscan software. The result are high definition 3D models, that serve for the creation of archaeological drawings.

The aim of the poster is to present case studies where photogrammetric 3D documentation has been used and evaluate its advantages and disadvantages.
