Indigenous storytelling in Canada has commonly been perceived through the lenses of western literary theory. In recent years, Indigenous scholars have been expressing their doubts about such an approach and Indigenous critical theories of storytelling started to get more attention and became more available.

This paper presents an overview of the main aspects of Indigenous perspective on storytelling, namely its characteristics and roles in Indigenous cultures. Dynamism, reciprocity, and relationality are the key features discussed in terms of characteristics and expansion of imagination and memory are examined in relation to the functions of storytelling in Indigenous societies.
