Discourse markers

Abstract

The chapter deals with words that are used in spoken informal and unprepared communication for various pragmatic purposes, such as signaling a change of topic, a request for help in a conversation, an effort to prolong one's speech. Determining the functions of words that have been identified as potential discourse markers using the quantitative method is the main focus of the chapter.

The given words are chosen to cover the speaker's relationship to the three components of the communication process: the message, the listener, the organization of the speech. An analysis of this magnitude has not yet been performed for Czech.
